About The Process

How it works

We are offering innovators the opportunity to test innovative business models and technologies that are subject to NSW regulation. Important consumer, worker and environmental safeguards will of course be sustained.

There are two stages to the program:

1. Decide which NSW Regulations to focus on, and 2. Open Applications for a sandbox including these regulations:

1. Decide focus
(Submission stage)

2. First Sandbox program
(Applications stage)

Tell us which NSW regulations have created barriers for you in testing your innovative product or service. We will use the information you provide to decide the focus of the first regulatory sandbox for NSW.

Having decided the focus, applications will open early 2017 for the first sandbox. Applications will be assessed using criteria listed below.

The Regulatory Sandbox Journey

Submissions nominating areas for the Regulatory Sandbox program have now closed. We are currently reviewing these submissions and the first regulatory sandbox is expected to open for applications in mid 2017.

Applications will be open for approximately 3-4 weeks to allow you to apply to participate in the first Regulatory Sandbox program. Applications will then be reviewed, feedback provided and outcomes announced.

Submissions - how we'll use them in deciding focus

Anyone is welcome to make a submission, however, owing to the breadth of activity NSW regulation covers, we need to focus. So we're looking for submissions that demonstrate potential for large numbers of NSW citizens to benefit that involve a small number of regulations.

Criteria for Applications

We'll use three broad criteria in assessing applications.*

Impact

We're looking for applications showing potential to create significant economic, social and environmental benefits to NSW.

Readiness

Your idea has to be ready to be implemented in the first half of 2017

NSW Regulations are the primary barrier.

We are currently only able to consider NSW regulations in a sandbox. If the main problem you are dealing with are regulations from other states or federal regulation, we will not be able to accept your application.

*Please note that these criteria may be added to prior to applications opening, please make sure you check the criteria on this site again once applications open.
